The journey began when Dick Denson asked Chuck Blair a simple question:  “I want Monte Vista Baptist Church to sponsor a 5K run.  Would you be interested in helping me?”

And Monte Vista’s first annual Resurrection Run 5k (plus 1-mile fun run and walk) was born.  The starter’s gun will fire at 8:00 on Saturday, April 7, which will be the culmination of a great deal of work.

In fact, Dick, who ran in high school and college, and is still an avid runner, talked Chuck into being the Race Director for the Resurrection Run.  “I was reluctant to get involved because I know how much work is involved to have a successful race,” said Chuck.  “But, the right answer was, ‘sure, I will be glad to help you.”Chuck has also directed the Blount County Schools Scholar’s Run and shared his director’s book with Dick.  Dick liked what he saw and got even more excited about the prospect of hosting a race. “I was hoping for the opposite effect,” quipped Chuck.

The two added Teddi Reynolds and Dennis Ridley to the committee, and the four are spearheading the race which begins at Sandy Springs Park near the Best Street entrance.  The group decided on the Saturday before Easter (thus the name “Resurrection Run”) to allow people from Monte Vista and the community to participate, as the holiday typically brings families together.  The 1-mile fun run and walk were added as a way to involve children and adults who can’t run the 5k distance.

The group wanted the money from registrations and sponsorships to remain in the community and ultimately chose Family Promise as the organization to which proceeds will be given.  Monte Vista participates in Family Promise of Blount County as a host church, which gives families with children temporary housing, and other assistance during their difficult time of transition.  Many individuals and groups at Monte Vista and in Blount County assist monetarily or as a volunteer for Family Promise, and the group is excited the Resurrection Run will support the families.

“The timing of the Resurrection Run is important to Monte Vista because it helps us put into action the things that were important to Jesus,” said MVBC Sr. Pastor, Jerry Mantooth.  “ Relationships, because this a friend and family event open to everyone in the community; caring for those in need, because we are helping fulfill the mission of Family Promise; and the resurrection, because it enables us to share the story of the cross with our community in a new way.”
